Best guitar strings for guitar players

What is the best guitar strings for a guitar player?
This question is often asked. From beginner to advanced guitar students.

The difference between the strings used in electric and acoustic guitar is the material. The strings for electric guitar are made of nickel, chromium alloys and steel. Strings used on acoustic guitars are typically made of bronze, bronze alloys, or nylon. Acoustic guitar also requires a thicker string gauge for amplified sound.

The simple answer is that a nylon acoustic string will give you a classical sound (finger style ,solo guitar, gypsy jazz). Nylon strings are made with softer materials and have lesser tension making them easier to handle than other strings. However, pain and difficulty in pushing down guitar strings are part of the learning process. The faster you’ll get callouses, the quicker you’ll be used to the finger pressure.

A steel string is more for those of you who want to sing and strum. It is the guitar you want for anything rock and pop music. Also for those of you interested in bluegrass and country music! There are many choices of course.

Here is the list of the guitar string brands I recommend. They are all USA made guitar strings.
Ernie Ball - Made in California
D'Addario - Made in New York
Dean Markley - Made in Michigan
Fender - Made in California

Is lighter gauge strings easier to play?

Lighter gauge strings are easier to play than heavier gauge strings because they require less tension. This means that your fingers don’t have to work as hard to press down or bend the string, which makes fretting chords and notes easier. One drawback of lighter Gaged strings is that they have a better chance of breaking, especially on the top 2 strings.

Again, the faster you’ll get callouses, the quicker you’ll be used to the finger pressure.

WARNING. If you buy a cheap quality guitar, it will not stay in tune and will be a huge struggle to play.
An article of specific recommendations of valuable guitars will be coming soon. So stay posted!

There are no rules. These guitars are only limited by your imagination.

Multi practicing for guitar players

I'm a big fan of efficient practicing. If you are paying attention, you can practice ear training at all times. Whether you are working on speed scales, sweep arpeggios, alternate picking, Legato etc. If you involve this concept to your guitar playing, it is impossible not to improve.

Sing!

Every note you play, sing to yourself at least in your head. Let's say for doing a Paul Gilbert style alternate picking exercise. Anybody knows you have to practice that over and over again. How many of us sing the pitches or ever name the notes when we are doing this?

We are already repeating over and over again, why not add more to it?

This apply to everything take a basic chord progression ex. D, C, G, that you have done a million times. This time Arpeggiate the chords and sing the pitches. Since we all know this progression so well. It's a great place to start.

Shifting Focus on Focus.

Most of us guitar players focus on our lead playing. That's great! It's so much fun!

Go to Guitar Center, listen to what you hear. Most likely you will hear the best and fastest licks from any cat that plugs on. Try this, plug in next to the guy. Tell him you are impressed with his playing. Play any groove or tune for him to go crazy over. Then ask him to play rhythm for you. He most likely will be a s quiet as if you throw a chart in front of him. If he passes the test, get his number immediately!
Even self proclaimed "Rhythm" guys tend to freelance avoiding the beat. The guy who can play rhythm with the beat will get the gig over any crotch rocket lead and premade rhythm parts off YouTube.

Learn to know why what your learning works and how you can expand it. It's just a language after all.  You can't have too many words.

Pocket Rhythm Tips

1/14/2019

The focus for new year 2019 with all my guitar students at all levels is work on rhythm.

Rhythm is overlooked by guitar players who usually practice by themselves in their room. We often forget the guitar is a rhythm instrument. Don't run away from your metronome or drum machine! The guitarist that can hold down the groove will get the gig before a fast lick. Fast lick guy is at guitar center annoying you while you are trying to check out your new guitar etc. No matter what your goals are, I want my fellow guitars to make music.

Tips: Always use a metronome or practice with a percussionist to get perfect, unending rhythm. Always practice strumming with a metronome to ensure you are rock-solid and reliable in the rhythm section. (Source:wikihow)

Irvine Guitar Lessons

Appreciate all the positive feedback about Bordas Music.

Peyton and I started out when he was in middle school. When I met him at the first guitar class, he did not know a single chord. Four years later, this is Peyton. Now he is using the basic pentatonic scale to improvise over an E blues. As a guitar teacher, I am very proud of how far he has come.

Again, very very proud of my student Peyton from Bordas Guitar Lesson in Irvine. I love seeing all my guitar students progress so rapidly. His accomplishment will help him get the college scholarship his family is looking for. I have many students in that position, the more outside activities, the better chance of standing out.
